Making money with stock photography can be a fun and rewarding hobby (or lifestyle for those lucky enough).  But what type of images sell the most and how can you capitalize on that?

Well, images that involve people usually sell the best.  People doing things like smiling, playing, laughing, painting, running, swimming etc. But most times the people images that sell were shot in a studio.  What can you do if you don’t have a studio on hand?

For those of us that don’t have a full studio set up and easy access to loads of beautiful models there are always other ways to make money in stock photography.

A good way to get started is to take what are known as ‘background images‘.  A background image is a photograph of anything that could be used as a background, or base image, for the designer.  In other words, the image will be used as a backdrop and the designer will add other images or text over the top to get the look they desire.

Good background ideas include deserted beaches, a brick wall, grainy wood, pebbles, green grass, a blank blackboard… the list is endless.

All graphic and web designers need background images, so they are always in high demand and the smart stock photographer has a bunch of them in their portfolio.

It may sound boring but it’s actually quite fun discovering new things to shoot as background images.  So go on, give it a try.

Below are some samples to get you thinking.

Happy shooting!
