Ever thought you had a great photo of a subject only to find someone else has an even better one with brighter colors, blacker blacks and better exposure?  Well, don’t worry, a lot of people do.  Have you ever looked at a professional photographers photographs and thought “How do they take such fantastic photos when mine all seem to come out dull and with no life to them?

Well the answer is… Photoshop.

With the coming of age of digital photography most, if not all, professional photographers now use some sort of post processing software to improve their photos.  This is not to say they are cheating in any way, photographers had been post processing their images in some way for years before digital photography came along.  The only difference now is that it is done on a computer and not in a darkroom.

Photoshop is the most popular image post processing software on the market but there are plenty to choose from including Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, and a free downloadable program called G.I.M.P.

The general improvements people make to their photos are to lighten, add contrast, remove red-eye and dust spots, crop, and to saturate the colors.

There are many more tools for you to use and play around with to get the look you’re aiming at, and people can do some amazing things to photos using Photoshop.  Some people even make all their money just playing around with photoshop and producing remarkable images.

So the next time you are looking at photographs and see that one  that stands out from all the rest, you’ll be able to say “I can do that!”

Happy Shooting!
